Bystander Intervention

SEE something, SAY something!

The 5 Ds of Intervention

DISTRACT:
  * Create a diversion without putting yourself in harms way.
  * Interrupt the situation without directly confronting anybody
  * Pretend to be lost.
  * Ask for the time or directions.
  * Pretend you know the person being harassed.
  * Talk to them about something random and take the attention off of the harasser.
  * Get in the way. Physically stand between the aggressor and the victim. (Turning so you can see BOTH parties.)

DELEGATE:
  * Get help/assistance/resources from someone who is nearby.
  * Find the store manager, supervisor, teacher, principal and ask them to intervene.

DELAY:
  * Check in with the person being harassed.

  * Ask them if they’re okay and tell them you’re sorry that happened to them
  * Ask them if there’s any way you can support them.

DOCUMENT:
  * IF you are safe, record the situation.
  * Give the recording to the victim.
  * Never post anything or use it without their permission.

DIRECT:
  * IF you feel safe, speak up.
  * Confront the aggressor.
  * Be firm, clear, and concise.
  * Say:
       “That’s Inappropriate, disrespectful, not okay, unacceptable!
       “That is racist!”
